The Mama Bear Program

The Mama Bear Program was created in order to prevent the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases from pregnant mothers to their unborn child. This is done by ensuring that mothers receive proper therapy, treatment, and care throughout their pregnancy, and that both mother and child receives appropriate care after birth. The program is voluntary. This program is a collaboration of the following agencies: Children Medical Services (with UF Rainbow Center),Healthy Start of Flagler and Volusia Counties, Inc., Outreach Community Care Network, and Volusia County Health Department.

  • Condom Distribution
  • HIV and Health Education
  • Pregnancy case management
  • HIV risk reduction counseling
  • Pregnancy support groups
  • Medical follow-up for newborn

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Any female living in Flagler or Volusia Counties who is HIV positive or has repeatedly tested positive for an STD while pregnant is eligible for the program, but it is not mandatory.
